I must say that French men excel in gallantry. When I arrived and was struggling with two bags up and down the stairs through the subway no less than 3 different men just grabbed my bags and hauled them up the stairs for me. I was so stunned all I could master was a very grateful "Merci"! Then this morning on my way to Montmartre, I witnessed another man assisting a woman in the same way.
I don't know if this is purely a French thing or all European men are this chivalrous, but at least I know they exist somewhere in this world.
